Technoeconomic Analysis of Rare-Earth Metal Recycling Using Efficient Metal Distillation

Recycling has been proposed as a promising potential source of supply to meet some the US rare-earth demand for use in permanent magnets. The high growth rates products that make magnets, particularly wind turbines and electric hybrid vehicles, show their stock is on rise near term will become available scrap feed recycling. This study presents an overview magnet recycling technologies focuses technoeconomic analysis liquid metal leaching distillation, including effect new continuous gravity-driven multiple thermal system (G-METS) distillation technology energy overall cost. G-METS can potentially reduce consumption process 64 kWh/kg, which about 30% less than production from ore 61–67% using conventional distillation.
